In February the first workshop of the non-rewarded Inventing Europe proposal Transmitting and Receiving Europe (TRANS) has been held (read more on
TRANS). This includes TIE-members
Suzanne Lommers and
Alexander Badenoch. A majority of the individual projects have received national funding and because of its high potential and participant's enthusiasm ESF decided to provide funds for networking. The three-day workshop, which has been kindly hosted by the European Broadcasting Union in Geneva, proved a stimulating and fruitful event. The state-of-the art of the individual projects and TRANS have been discussed, followed by a presentation by Andy O'Dwyer (BBC, Audiovisual Archives) on the EU-funded project "Video Active – Creating access to Europe's televisual heritage' and a tour through the EBU-Archives. More information on the Video Active project can be found on
www.videoactive.eu. The second and third day entirely stood in the light of archival research, a tour through the EBU News Exchange headquarter, and discussions on future TRANS activities. The next TRANS Workshop will be held in Lisbon, 9-10 October 2008. The Workshop 'Airy Curtains in the European Ether: Broadcasting and Communication Technologies in East/West relations during the short 20th Century' will work towards an edited volume.
